@crazybob: no that's in the route covered in ash and also near impossible in a nuzlocke

Reply Lucario01, December 27th, 2012, 11:49 am

@kennelofdog: Route 113, it's a 5% encounter chance :p

Well, this is my first comment on the nuzlocke, but I've been reading it more or less every day ever since Roxanne's gym battle. I have to say, when it started out it was good, but nothing particularly special in my opinion, but I really think it has become an incredible comic, mainly due to the amazing characterization of the Pokemon, but I guess I'm just a little slow to jump on the commenting bandwagon. I'll probably be commenting fairly regularly from now on, but I'm going to take this opportunity to say my opinion on the characters thusfar.

Tyton: There's not much to say about Tyton, as he's a bit of a vanilla character, but he works well as a protagonist as he is so down to earth.
Haunshaul: I like how much haunshaul has come to mirror tytons personality and idioms, which is a really clever way to show how close the bond between them is.
Gerald: At first I thought that Gerald was a bit of a flat and annoying character, and that he was just going to be a smooth talker, but I've really grown fond of him and as one of the oldest members of the group, he seems to have grown quite protective of the younger members.
Rorschach: Beyond a shadow of a doubt, my favourite character. I love his relentless optomism, and I will never grow tired of watching the rest of the team react to him (quite often my friends react to me in the same way). I'm aware of the fact that you've finished the game a long time ago, but feel the need to implore your past self to not let him die. Pleaaase past Haunshaul, look after that Dustox. By the way, how are you meant to pronounce Rorschach, I've been using Roar-skarch.
DJ: DJ is a really cool little whismur, and I really liked her interactions with Archie, so I'm hoping that she'll continue to be involved in any interactions with Aqua. The only problem is, I can't help worrying that if you don't train her up soon she's going to have to leave the team for someone stronger. You have no idea how dissapointed you made me when you made me think that she was going to be trained a couple of pages ago, only for it to turn out that Marston was caught instead.
Chester: I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of Chester, he really gets on my nerves, a bit like Gerald did at the start, but he has not started to grow on me yet. I'm aware that he's meant to be annoying, and I like how he's like the epitome of annoying teenagers at the moment, but he just doesn't seem to work for me. That said, I expect others like him, so each to his own I guess.
Marston: I don't know much about Marston yet, but it's nice that he's not immediately accepting of the fact that he now has to follow Tyton around and do his bidding, and it would be really nice if he keeps up a bit of a resistance for a while.

Anyway, the characerization so far has been immense, but I'm fairly sure I saw you say somewhere, possibly the questions page, that you were going to devote even more time to it from now on, which is making me fairly excited for the future of this comic. So, I look forward to everything else to come, and you can expect to see me around here much more often, but in the meantime, thanks for putting up with my massive comment! And thanks again for the fantastic comic.

@ozymandias_jones: ...aaaaaaaand we have a winner for the "Comment Closest to a Novel" category! Thank you so much! That sort of in-depth analysis really means a lot.

So, a few comments of my own!

1. I honestly don't know if I consciously realized the protective side of Gerald. I guess that just kind of evolved on its own...as Pokemon are wont to do.
2. It's pronounced "Roar-shack". =)
3. I don't think anyone likes Chester. Myself included at this point in the comic. That was intentional, because how often in real life would you encounter so many people that you genuinely enjoy?
4. As awesome as it is that you look forward to the rest of the comic, it's a bit intimidating trying to reach the level of quality some of you guys are hoping for. I hope I don't disappoint! =)

Edit to #3: Zelkova likes Chester.

@Haunshaul: Yeah, I'll try to cut down in future, but I had almost a years worth of opinions to get off my chest.

1. I think it's really interesting how fictional characters have a tendency to grow on their own and become independent from their creators like that, and usually it is the sign of a truly realistic and well designed character.
2. Ah, that 'ch' is a pesky little thing to pronounce.
3. I hadn't thought about it that way, and to be honest, that's a really good idea when you think about it. Lot's of the time in comics like this, although characters are sometimes 'good' and sometimes 'evil', they are all more or less likable, which I suppose isn't an accurate portrayal of life. I notice how you said 'at this point' which makes me think that their may be a redemtion for chester down the line, so if you manage to make me like him, I will be very impressed, although not particularly surprised, knowing your comic so far.
4. Honestly, the last thing I wanted to do was intimidate you. I have complete confidence that the comic will live up to mine, and everyone else's hopes, because I really think that so far it has shown you have genuine skills as an author, and I wish you the best of luck in this, and any future endeavors.

@Haunshaul: Yay!

Seriously though I really do like Chester, I just don't find him that annoying. A hipster maybe but I would still be his friend if given the choice.

I been hanging out on /v/ for so long that the word "buzzword" had became a buzzword for me. So seeing people saying swag for the humor of it is natural and just became funny to me.

To much going on in the comment section, but no one seems to mention how well drawn the cave is.

Reply Zelkova, December 27th, 2012, 6:06 pm

@Miles Hikari: Haun should already know how I feel about it. I only bugged him for the longest time to draw like that. =P

Still, that cave is nicely done. First time I believe he added foreground though technically everything is in front of the characters.
